Shadsworth

The Silk Street Manchester project reimagines affordable housing with a focus on sustainability, community, and a connection to the city’s rich industrial heritage. By transforming a brownfield site overlooking the Rochdale Canal, we are building more than just homes; we are weaving a tapestry of green living, social connection, and economic opportunity.

Overarching Development Agreement to regenerate 850 unit housing estate. New homes, targeted demolition and rebuild. Public realm. New park and community centre.

This 1950s cottage suburb styled estate once suffered from reputational stigma, poor quality urban management, and deteriorating housing stock. However, demand for good quality affordable housing in the area remains high. We're undertaking a radical remodeling of this neighborhood, aimed at creating much-needed additional homes while also refurbishing existing ones. The new homes will be situated within a newly landscaped public park, providing access to new community infrastructure and benefiting from reinstated hedgerows. These design-led interventions are intended to foster pride and a sense of community.Estates like Shadsworth were originally built by architects with strong, utopian visions to house balanced and mixed communities. Our development seeks to reinstate that level of ambition in a modern, 21st-century way.
